Study Group: Paint It Black - The Fanatic Growth of Militant Islamism, the Disruption of World Order, and a Generation of War?

Talk with Laurence Stallings and Scott Stelle, d.a.i. Tübingen. The very title of our discussion group is enough to scare the daylights out of most people?The nation-state, that building block of world order and stability as we know it, finds itself today under stress on two related fronts. In the West, multiculturalism seems to erode the collective fabric of society, its ethos, as it were. And in the non-West, ethnic, religious, and cultural conflict is tearing apart many new states, with no end in sight. But our main thrust this quarter will be an intense focus on ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and its self-declared Caliphate. The U.S. State Department has designated it as the most dangerous political force in the world today. President Obama has vowed ?to degrade and destroy" ISIS at home and abroad. Whether this is possible in principle, or even feasible in the long or short run, is a question we would like to tackle in depth in all its ramifications in our ongoing discussions this quarter (and perhaps beyond).
