50 Jahre Mythos John F. Kennedy
Talk by Dr. Thomas Gijswijt, University of Tübingen

50 years ago, on June 26, 1963, President John F. Kennedy spoke the four most famous words of the Cold War. Kennedy’s speech at the Schöneberger Rathaus is often seen as a typical hardline Cold War statement made by a president who had just completed an emotional visit to the Berlin Wall. In this talk, Dr. Thomas Gijswijt from the Department for American Studies of the University of Tübingen will argue that JFK himself was partly to blame for this stubborn misinterpretation. The actual purpose of Kennedy’s Berlin visit was more nuanced and complex, as a look at the context, aims and impact of JFK’s European tour – the first to be televised live throughout Western Europe – will show.
