Our Beloved Sudan

Our Beloved Sudan tells the story of the Sudanese nation with the countdown to a self-determination referendum on whether the country remains united or breaks apart as the central event. The gap in understanding between north and south is apparent in their divergent aspirations as well as in the narratives they tell about themselves and their history – While in the north of the country citizens and politicians clutch at the hope for unity; in the south the dream of an independent fatherland is everyday more assertive.

Our beloved Sudan takes the historical trajectory of a nation from birth in 1956 to its death or transmutation into two separate states in 2011 and within this structure it interlaces a public and a private story. Inviting key political figures to reflexively engage with the histroical trajectory of the film while observing an ordinary mixed race family caught across the divides of a big historical moment as they try to make sense of it and live through it.
