Lobbying is an ancient practice, protected as a form of free speech and a means by which citizens can exercise the right to petition the government.

But, in times of crisis, can lobbying go too far? Can interest groups prevent government action when government action is essential? Can working out a compromise produce a solution that cannot solve a problem? How lobbyists work in Washington is always subject to change as laws and court rulings alter the definition of proper conduct by interest groups. How do populist movements, like the Tea Party, start and what are their chances to change the American political system?
